San Diego hosts a range of different BJJ gyms from different lineages, but rest assured that you won’t be lacking in option if you come to San Diego because it Is considered to be one of the liveliest city in the USA. You can almost find anything in San Diego as long as you are looking hard enough and the same can be said if you are looking to train BJJ
Why Train BJJ in San Diego
Obviously anyone can train BJJ almost anywhere on earth as long as you have a soft surface to fall on. San Diego is a big city and as such you can find almost any type of martial arts here, the problem is not all martial arts are equal and some are not worth learning in the first place (Depends on individual needs).
BJJ or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the oldest martial arts in the world that is focused on the art of grappling. It is universally considered to be one of the most effective martial arts to learn with the least physical entry barrier, anyone of any shape or size can benefit from learning BJJ. Compared to other martial arts that requires athleticism such as Boxing or Gymnastics, BJJ is the most “friendly” martial arts to learn. As such even kids and women who are scientifically weaker than adult men can enjoy BJJ and learn a thing or two of how to defend themselves in hostile situations.
If you are based in San Diego and looking to learn the art of ground grappling then BJJ should be the first thing that you learn. You can supplement the training by adding boxing or Muay Thai and you should be good. By learning those two martial arts you will be safe possible street fights situation or similarly dangerous situation.
Best Jiu Jitsu Academy in San Diego
Here are some academies you should check out if you are looking for Brazilian jiu jitsu in San Diego:
One of the oldest and most famous martial arts gyms in San Diego. The Arena is an amazing place to be at because the gym is very world class. Instructors are mostly consisted of former high-level fighters such as Chris Leben and Baret Yoshida so that’s noteworthy.
How about the facilities? Here is what the Arena provides:
- State of the art equipment.
- Constantly updated.
- 27,000 square feet. Largest of its kind in San Diego.
- 3 individual training buildings for separate instruction.
- 8,000 Square Feet of Mats. Biggest in San Diego.
- 35 Striking Bags. Includes Heavy, Thai, Speed, etc.
- 2 Competition Rings. Doubles Sparring capacity.
- Multiple Shower / Bathroom Areas. Always kept clean.
- Fanatical Focus on Hygiene. Gym cleaned twice daily.
You can choose what program to join because the academy offers different classes of martial arts. The only problem of the gym is how they do not show pricing information openly. Guess you have to ask about prices yourself, be careful not to be trapped in hidden fees and lengthy contracts.
Usually i will talk about prices and free trials at the end but i can’t do that with Primal BJJ because this is the ONLY academy i have found that offers a FREE 30 Days training along with private classes. I do not really care who is teaching and what facilities are there. 30 days of free training is a MUST. Go ahead and train at Primal BJJ if you are staying longer than a month in San Diego.
12 22 Jiu Jitsu
I can confidently say that 12 22 Jiu Jitsu is one of the most underrated BJJ academy in San Diego. You can check EVERYTHING you’ll ever need before deciding by just visiting the website. Prices, schedules and other information are easily accessible and open to the public. Not to mention the fees are VERY reasonable for an academy in San Diego.
Definitely check the place out if you have the chance, most likely you will not regret it.
Rodrigo Medeiros BJJ
From how the website looks this academy seems to be one of the “old” players in San Diego. Conceived by the great Rodrigo Medeiros, this academy looks pretty legit and instructors are pretty well accomplished in BJJ.
My only negative opinion about the academy is the lack of pricing information. But that can be easily known just by asking yourself or taking a free trial so do that i guess.
